Core Aeration

I always answer the question when I get it “Do I need to aerate my lawn?” like this. Well, the answer is yes. However, you may not be able to visibly see the results per say. The core aeration does break up thatch, open the ground for oxygen to get to the roots as well as water. This will help to establish a deeper, stronger, healthier root system.

Core Aeration: A Deeper Dive

This is a lawn care technique similar to plug aeration, but it involves removing larger cores of soil from the lawn. The deeper penetration allows for greater improvement in soil structure and drainage.

How does aeration work?

1. Core removal: A machine is used to extract larger cores of soil from the lawn.

2. Soil disruption: This process breaks up compacted soil more deeply, allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate further into the root zone.

3. Root growth: With improved soil conditions, grass roots can grow more vigorously, leading to a thicker, healthier lawn.

Benefits of core aeration:

· Enhanced soil structure: Provides deeper penetration and disruption of compacted soil.

· Improved drainage: Can be more effective at addressing severe drainage issues.

· Increased nutrient absorption: Allows nutrients to reach deeper into the root zone.

· Reduced thatch buildup: Helps to prevent thatch, which can suffocate grass roots.

· Improved root growth: Promotes a denser, healthier lawn.

When is core aeration recommended?

· Severe compaction: For lawns with extremely compacted soil.

· Deep-rooted grasses: Suitable for lawns with deep-rooted grasses like Bermuda grass or zoysia grass.

· Heavy foot traffic: If your lawn experiences heavy foot traffic, core aeration can help to alleviate compaction.

How often should you core aerate your lawn?

The frequency of aeration depends on factors such as soil type, climate, and lawn usage. Generally, lawns with heavy foot traffic or compacted soil may need core aeration every year or two, while lawns with good drainage and moderate usage can be aerated every three to five years.
